Augustine of Hippo, Sermon 299B
1. Apostolorum passio beatorum istum nobis sacrauit diem: istam gloriam meruerunt per totum mundum, contemnendo mundum. Petrus, apostolorum primus: Paulus, apostolorum nouissimus. Primum et nouissimum ad unum diem passionis adduxit primus et nouissimus christus.
'The martyrdom of the blessed apostles has consecrated this day for us; it was by despising the world that they earned this renown throughout the whole world, Peter the first of the apostles, Paul the last of the apostles.'
In what follows Augustine comments upon several episodes concerning Peter and Paul in the gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.
