Augustine of Hippo, Sermon 290
[In natali Ioannis Baptistae
'On the birthday of John the Baptist']
1. Sanctus Ioannes, non euangelista, sed baptista, missus est ante faciem Christi praeparare uias eius.
'Saint John, not the Evangelist but the Baptist, was sent before the face of Christ to prepare his ways.'
In what follows Augustine presents John the Baptist as Christ's forerunner and an example of humility. His uniqueness is emphasised by the fact that he is the only saint whose earthly birthday the Church celebrates, whereas there are many servants of God whose martyrdom is celebrated.
