Interia advenit festivitas sancti Marcelli, quae apud urbem Cavillonensim mense septimo caelebratur, et Gunthchramnus rex adfuit. Verum ubi, peracta solemnia, ad sacrosanctum altarium communicandi gratia accessisset, venit quidam quasi aliquid suggesturus.
'Meanwhile the feast of Saint Marcellus came round and was celebrated at the town of Chalon-sur-Saône in the seventh month [=September]. King Guntram was present. Mass was over and the King had stepped forward to the holy altar to receive communion when a man came up to him as if he had something to say.'
The man is found to have a knife, and confesses that he intended to assassinate Guntram. Guntram allows him to live, since he considered it impious to kill someone who had been captured in a church.
Text: Krusch and Levison 1951, 415. Translation: Thorpe 1974, 482, lightly modified.
