E00274: The Liber Pontificalis, written in Latin in Rome in the 530s, and re-edited before 546, in its account of *Evaristus (bishop and martyr of Rome, S00112), tells how he died a martyr and was buried in Rome close to the body of *Peter (the Apostle, S00036) on 27 October [AD 108].

'Evaristus, born in Greece, an Antiochene, son of a Jew named Judas from the city of Bethlehem, held the see 9 years, 10 months, 2 days. He was bishop in the time of Domitian and Nerva Trajan from the consulship of Valens and Vetus [AD 96] to that of Gallus and Bradua [AD 108]. He was crowned with martyrdom … He was buried close to the blessed Peter’s body on the Vatican on the 6th day before the Kalends of November [27 October].'
