Rosemary's father, Douglas, was captured on the other side of the Channel during the war. He spoke of foraging for turnips and how some prisoners were killed when kicked by horses and died.

He was held in a POW camp for the majority of the war, probably in Germany.

He ended up weighing 6.5 stone with visible jaundice. He never wanted to eat canteen food, as one officer had actually put teeth in it.

Despite his experiences, he didn't hate the Germans as a people.

After the war, Douglas didn't attend university as he didn't have the time and needed to get a job. He eventually became a lecturer and invented a tactic to fix oil disasters.

Douglas passed away in 1980.
