My mum, Dorothy Roberts, was in the army in WWII and she kept a diary and mementos about her life especially about the food she ate. My mum loved her food. She kept all the menus from the war; they were very different as designed and drawn from hand.
Friends would sign the menus as a keepsake. It is very interesting how they made the food sound so delicious when they had so little.
