Courage Under Fire: Sergeant Walters' Military Medal

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 18:17 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

On 8th January 1945, a tank received a direct hit. My grandad, Eddy Walters, was in charge of recovering this tank. He did so under extremely heavy fire and towed it out, while still on fire. He then helped the Canadians recover seven vehicles from an uncleared minefield, again while under fire. He then went back to recover another tank, but was driven back by the accuracy of the fire. He returned after nightfall and worked until 2 am, in spite of continuous fire and enemy patrols. He displayed outstanding initiative and exceptional bravery. For this, he was awarded the Military Medal.
