Stanley Howard, David's father, was the rector of a country parish near Rochester in Kent. David was born in 1944 and on one occasion when his pram had been left outside the house a doodlebug came close to hitting it. Stanley was an ARP warden looking for doodlebug fires in the local area. Stanley had an interesting document (not supplied) from the Government stating that he would be an emergency contact from the Ministry of Food.

In the backyard, the family kept chickens, which supplied them with eggs. There was a little area called 'the Glebe' where they grew potatoes, peas etc. Stanley kept a parish newsletter.
