Copper-alloy buckle and plate

Gatty Slip:'\2 Anglo-Saxon bronze buckles found at Ozingell in Kent. Formerly in the Rolfe Collection: vide Collectanea Antiqua vol. 3 pl. 6 figs 7 & 9'"Bronze buckle and plate, length 3.8cm. Oval buckle with tongue terminating at back in rectangular plate that overlaps to like flush with raised decorated top of buckle-plate. Buckleplate has backplate made in one with it, folded over buckle and cut to permit passage of tongue, then extended to full length to be rivited 3 times to front. At front belt plate has flange at base in lower plane, with 3 dome-headed rivets that go through to be filed off at back. Ornamental piece of plate hollow at back - tongue has bronze hook. Plate of tongue decoration, with engraved rectangular outline, and diagonals - plate of plate has similar outline, with diagonals radiating from hollow square.Probably belonged to tag, M 7356Catalogue number M 7354 also used by another bronze buckle from Ozingell (described on one Gatty Slip). – D.H.
