Copper-alloy buckle and plate

online resource
posted on 2021-10-26, 19:42 authored by Helena HamerowHelena Hamerow
Bronze buckle and plate, cast together, total length 3.3cm. Small oval loop, originally with iron tongue (now broken away) attached through hole at top of plate. Plate very interesting - shaped like body of fish, with tail at foot end, and bifurcated head reaching up and slightly around the loop - typical Germanic mode of converting full face into two profiles. Fish has concentric chevron decoration on tail, representing fins, and both halves of head have recognisable eye and long upper jaw. Single rivet at top and base of plate.
