Silver? sword chape. Max. width 5.5 cm. Unusual U shaped binding with rivets at top and transverse ornamental grooves. Remains of bronze plates back and front, and adhering remains of wood of scabbard itself. See engraving for view of this in top of bronze plate. Now found - a narrow band at top with 2 rivets.Two side extensions now missing (see original engraving).A case of burial of the sheath without the sword itself!SCH Incorrectly asigns this object to catalogue number KAS 639. Re-asigned to catalogue number KAS 839 based on illustration and description in the catalogue (Payne 1892a, 37) and original excavation report (Brent 1866, 178) – D.H.
