Conversations with my Grandparents
I asked my grandparents if they remembered anything from WWII. Since my grandad was 3 when the war started and 9 when it ended, he only remembers a bit from it. One of his memories was when he, his brother and his mum heard a plane going over the top of them. As there were no air-raid shelters near their house his mum propped the sofa up and that is where he and his brother hid.
My grandma was really young when the war was happening so she doesn't really remember anything, but she asked her sister who was a bit older when everything was going on and she said, "We used to live in Heaton Park near an RAF training base and our dad took me and your grandma out on a walk one day until our dad heard a plane coming to blow up the training base since they knew that people were in there so he pulled us into the closed bush so the planes couldn't see us".
My grandpa also said that his dad got asked to defuse a bomb that was sent down by the Germans so he rushed there on his motorbike but unfortunately, he didn't make it to the bomb since he died going around the corner on his motorbike. There was a big chance that he wouldn't have made it to the bomb in the first place.
