My father was called up on his 18th birthday, the 5th day of D-Day. My mother escaped to the Carpathian Mountains. Dad trained in England and went to France, Germany, and Holland. Mum was born in 1925 in Poland, and her parents were taken by Russians in 1940 to the Gulag. My mother escaped but was captured by the Nazis in 1932. She was in a concentration camp and worked in various places. She carried messages for the Polish Underground and was arrested. When released, she worked in a barbed wire factory. At one point, Dad and a colleague lost their way, and Mum hid them for 3-4 days. Mum tried to guide them to the British lines. At the end of the war, Mum was in a DP camp, and Dad was delivering supplies. He went to the camp and was told he needed to see an interpreter, realizing it was the same lady who had helped him. They got married in Germany as my Mum did not have the papers to come to England. After they met and married, they returned to my paternal grandparent's house. Mum started at Cologne and finished at the DP Camp.
