Church Organist and Bomb Disposal Expert

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 19:27 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

Relates to Geoffrey Arthur Maurice Sargent. The youngest of 13 children, he worked as a surveyor before the war. At the outbreak of hostilities he trained as a bomb disposal operative, and was commissioned, eventually attaining the rank of Major. He received the MBE for his work, mainly, we think, in Asia. Having survived the war he returned home and became a church organist and choir master in churches local to The Lee. He was related to the organist, conductor, and composer Sir Malcolm Sargent.
