Christopher Bage - Royal Army Medical Corps

Chris Bage was born on the 23rd July 1919 in Mitre Street, South Shields.

Chris was called up to the Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C.) in December 1939. He went through his class 3, 2 and 1 nursing assistant training then parachute training.

On June the 6th 1944 he was taken prisoner near Normandy. He was wounded and was taken to a French hospital where shrapnel was removed from his leg. He was then sent to Stalag IXC prisoner of war camp near Leipzig in Germany. He remained there for the duration of the war until the camp was liberated by the Americans in 1945.

Shortly after the war in 1945 he married Mildred Moy. He returned to his former job working in a sawmill but then trained as a State Enrolled Nurse. He worked at Preston Hospital North Shields until he retired. He died in 2004 aged 85.
