online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 20:02 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

This is an account of the childhood wartime memories of Mrs Ruth Gregg (née Tobitt), born 9 June 1931. She currently lives in the village of East Knoyle, W. Wiltshire. The contributor's mother's childhood included being taught at home (by post from Croydon School) when the family was evacuated to the countryside, renting a house in Whitchurch, Herefordshire. When she returned to Croydon in 1942 Ruth remembered the air raid sirens, and going to the Anderson Shelter, wearing siren suits (boiler suits). They returned to Whitchurch in 1944 (the doodle bug raids in London). Their home in Croydon was unscathed.
