Memories from the time before D Day, when I was a little boy living by the sea on outskirts of Bognor Regis:

*Armoured cars lined up under camouflage netting in Aldwick.
*Troops giving me chocolate as they marched by in Aldwick.
*A doodle bug exploding in Pagham Harbour, after my sister and I had been hastily pushed into our shelter on our mother's hearing it buzzing overhead.
*Planes taking off over our heads from Tangmere aerodrome, presumably towing gliders across to Normandy.
*Seeing con-trails winding way up in the cloudless summer skies and the faint chatter of machine guns. Perhaps Douglas Bader, who apparently had a house on the Aldwick Bay Estate.
*V-Day bunting
*Huge explosions over the Channel, said to be armouries being blown up?
*Dad coming home from service, with bananas!
