Grandfather, Charles Bretnall, served in the 8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers (Infantry), at Dunkirk and in India.

Involved with his infantry battalion in retreat to Dunkirk. Remembered being at Dunkirk - turned away from a rescue boat and then later saw the boat being blown up (by the Luftwaffe).

Later trained as a Chef and served in India and Burma. Could speak Punjabi, but always thought he was joking (never took it seriously).
