Bill Symes military service in Kenya
My grandfather, Albert William Symes (Bill), was a dairy farmer in Kenya and part of the Kenya Defence Force (along with his brother-in-law THE Jackson). He joined the East African Reconnaissance Squadron (EARS) in November 1939 and then joined the newly formed East African Armoured Car Regt (EAACR). They were involved in pushing the Italians back and finally taking Abyssinia.
During his time he was mentioned in despatches which we believe is due to an event that was recorded at El Wac and also received the very rare (and short lived) East African Forces Badge - only about 100 were issued.
During his time he acquired a number of photos, which I have digitised and feel they would be of interest to a wider group, as photos of the offensive are quite scarce.
In 1943, after they had defeated the Italians, the Regiment moved to Ceylon where there is a photo of Bill on parade with his command.
During the war, my grandmother looked after the farm and British soldiers would visit regularly for rest. They also took on an Italian POW to help with the farm. He was a very good carpenter and made a lot of items for the house, including a slide for their children.
