My mum was in charge of an officer's mess at Bicester at some point during the war. She would go to Bicester market with a jeep and could buy any food she required. She said she had German airmen prisoners of war who would help with the shopping. (She also said they were very handsome.)
On occasion, she was asked to prepare a buffet for civilian local people to attend in the mess. She said the long buffet table would be groaning with food which went within 10 minutes of the doors being opened!
