"I worked in the telephone exchange in Sheffield and was there on 14th November 1940. We looked out of the window and we could see a red glow in the sky. We knew somewhere in the midlands was getting a pasting. Soon the lines from Coventry stared to go down, so we knew where was getting bombed. As the last line from Coventry went down, the whole room, full of ladies, burst out crying".
