Bekesbourne Grave 23

A very large and high tumulus, which stands on the very brow of the rising ground, at the distance of about a hundred and seventy paces to the southward from those already opened, there being none between them. The grave was about seven feet deep. In getting down were found several shin-bones of oxen, or some other large animals, and at the depth of about five feet was an oyster shell. The bones of the skeleton were almost gone; the coffin plainly appeared to have been of oak; it had been very thick, and had passed the fire. Nothing but two or three large nails. This tumulus was on the left hand of the road.
