Barbara's War: A Child's Perspective

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 19:51 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

Barbara Springall was born in 1940. Her mother was very ill, and she was born at seven months old. Her father was in the army, but still in England at the time. When he went to visit the new baby, he was escorted by two military men to ensure that he did not run off.

In her grandmother's house in London, there was a big white table that they had to hide under in air raids. There were cushions and children's books, and they could hear the planes flying overhead.

When her father finally came home at the end of the war, it was really strange because she was living with a man that she didn't really know.
