Bernard Palmer was a radio engineer who served in the army, first in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (1940-42) and then in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (1942-46).

In 1941, he was in Cape Town, where a family who entertained him wrote to his wife to let her know that he was well. He later fought in the desert where he had a chance meeting with his brother.

In 1944, he was based in Northern Holland where he lived with a photographer and his family. They wrote to Bernard's wife to let her know he was safe and expressed their gratitude to the Allied Forces for liberating Holland. Bernard was also in Paris following the liberation.
