Annie Gelly - Childhood Memories

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 18:14 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

My father was a bus driver and part of his work involved taking miners to work in a local mining town in Leicestershire, so as a result he had a 'reserved occupation'. This meant that he did not have to serve in the Army, but he could serve in the Home Guard instead.

Actual size of the ID disk is the same as an old silver sixpence. My grandfather (who was a jeweller and watchmaker) made this for me when I was 4 years old and was admitted to hospital with scarlet fever.

Victory bell actual size: height 6.5 " (16cm), radius 12" (12cm). Cast from a shot-down enemy aircraft. Three images are those of Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin.

I am not attaching ration books as I think they are irrelevant to this project; they are dated 1953/54.
