Ann Groves's Evacuation from Bexhill to Yattendon

online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 18:38 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

Ann was at school at Winceby House in Bexhill when war broke out. To lessen the risk of being caught up in enemy action across the English Channel, the school was evacuated. After two alternative places of accommodation were tried (the second at Knill Court caught fire while the girls were out on the hockey pitch!), Lord Iliffe offered the school the use of his house at Yattendon Court near Newbury. Ann recalled her days there during conversations with her children and grandchildren.
