Alf Wallace (father) was a farmworker and at TA depot in Newbury. Served in Libya but shipped home the day of El Alamein then to France.
Devastated by suffering of animals in France. Encountered a goat, they milked her to relieve suffering. Found a farmer's dog trapped in ruins - gave it some bully beef. Dog remained a companion of another soldier.
Promoted to Sergeant and was at Lüneburg Heath on the day Montgomey took German surrender.
After the war returned to Kintbury and joined TA. In 1980s and 1990s was treasurer for Royal British Legion until his death in 1996.
