<p dir="ltr">Arthur George Vowles was born on 3rd March 1920 in Bow, London. He joined the Navy in 1938 when he was 18 years old. He became a medic in the Navy, being shore based in a Naval hospital. He spent a lot of time in Egypt and Eritrea. In Eritrea he helped to build a road, which the Italians bombed. He also built an incinerator to burn bandages etc. He spent time on the Ark Royal and Indomitable.</p><p>On leaving the Navy, he became a Prison Officer.</p>
