A bike ride
Lilian and her mother Elizabeth were at home in Wavertree, Liverpool when the bombing started. As usual they prepared to go to the shelter at the end of the road as the sirens were sounding. This time was different though. As they reached the hallway, a bomb had landed nearby and the blast hit with a force loud and terrifying. Lilian ran ahead of her mother and as they did the hallway walls started collapsing inward onto them. They held hands and managed to get the door open and get out into the road which was a heap of rubble. They had no home left. Lilian's bike was in a small shed outside and Elizabeth said for her to ride around and see if she could see a "for rent" sign on any of the houses in the next roads. So Lilian rode around for a long time and finally came up a little house in Bartlett Street and because of this they secured a new home which they lived in for over 25 years. In fact Elizabeth lived there even longer and had her grandchildren, staying years later when the war was over. It was a lovely little house. They adored it and had happy times there. Elizabeth never really recovered from the incident and even though the war was over the sirens were used sometimes and she would jump and think it was time to run. Lilian remembered that bike ride all of her life. She saw it as a great adventure as she cycled down the road amongst the rubble after the bombs fell.
