Headlight adapters were introduce to help the blackout. The Lighting Restrictions Order 1940 required each car headlamp to have a mask consisting of a metal plate completely covering the front of the lamp. The only light emitted should pass through a slit in the plate approximately 4 inches long by half and inch wide, fitted with a strip of ribbed glass. A covered metal hood projected 3 inches from the plate to prevent emission of light in an upward direction. No light was to be visible above the horizontal.

I have had the adapter for some years. It was given to me by a customer at Lucas.
