A Southend Evacuee

online resource
posted on 2024-08-20, 10:36 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

He was evacuated from Southend. He had to walk from Liverpool Street station to Paddington with his parents who mistakenly left a suitcase in a café en route, They couldn’t remember the way back but he could and was able to take his parents back to collect their luggage. He stayed with relatives on Dartmoor. He did move back to Southend and see a V1. He does not remember being frightened but does remember the pitch dark at night. Another memory was having to leave a lesson at school when the siren sounded and walk in line with the other children to the air raid shelter where the lesson was continued.

His father was an ARP as he was too old to serve (he had been a baker). He worked in the Home Guard and with St John's ambulance as well.
