online resource
posted on 2024-06-05, 20:12 authored by Their Finest Hour Project Team

The contributor's father used to say that he was in the 8th army; he had an 8th army badge. However ,records say that he was actually in the Royal Army Service Corps. The contributor believes he served in North Africa. He used to go to Portsmouth to 8th Army Veterans group meetings. He may have been a driver for the 8th army with the RASC. Some of the 8th army veterans he used to meet with (in Portsmouth) came to his funeral in 1999. Before the war, he was a bread deliverer for a bakery in Coventry.

He was born in Pudsey, Leeds. George's father was killed in World War I, and his mother had connections in Coventry, so they moved there. George's wife (the contributor's mother) worked for Cash's, who produced sewn labels for clothes during the war. George and his wife (Madge) married in 1936 in Coventry.
