A Manchester Family's Contributions and Sacrifices
Two photographs attached- of Kathleen Walker in her ATS uniform. One of her brothers was in intelligence. W Walker was the eldest, and then her younger brother L Walker was a pilot. She lived in Manchester at this point. Therefore, all the family were involved and had a role to play in the Second World War.
My father's logbook depicts him flying a spitfire on 28th November 1942. In the book, he details the flight over Tunis. He was attacked and shot down. Details are included of his injuries and how his 2nd was shot down and killed. The book records how many hours they flew, where they went and when. Logbook 2 outlines what he did after being shot down.
The air force diary records what happened on 28th November 1942 when he got shot down. The diary is a lot more detailed and personal compared to his logbook. Attached is a printed copy of what is written in the diary as its difficult to read.
The letter attached to his parents is interesting. It is dated 24th December 1942 as he is still in Africa in December, even though he was shot down in November. All letters were numbered (this is number 10) as they didn’t know when and in what order the letters would be received. It was his first Christmas ever away from home.
