A Heroic Pilot Remembered

online resource

My father, Alan Ernest Budds, was ground crew in Bomber Command in the RAF 75 New Zealand Squadron.

My story is about Sergeant Pilot James Allen Ward, who was in the squadron with my father. He won the Victoria Cross for walking along the wing of a plane (a Wellington bomber) to put out a fire.

Two months after this Sergeant Pilot Ward was killed in a raid over Hamburg. He is buried there. I have a book written by Alan Mitchell which has a whole chapter on Ward and his heroic war. The book is called "New Zealanders in the Air War".
