James Ellard was born in 1883. He went to the Duke of York Asylum (School) in Chelsea, his father Michael was a Chelsea Pensioner so James was eligible to attend this school. James was a Regimental Policeman in Belfast, stationed in The Queens Barracks Belfast, before joining up into the 1st Bn. Norfolk Regiment, (7473) on the 22nd August 1914. James died of typhus on 24th August 1914 only 2 days later, aged 30. He was the son of Michael and Mary Ellard. His parents were not notified of his death until 1919, and then only after they wrote letters to The War Office, enquiring about James.
