John was a Captain in the Royal Engineers and retired as a Colonel. He served in the Boer War and Ireland (Curragh, 1916) but the rest of his service history is unknown. Whilst in Curragh, Ireland in 1916, John was drawn, from life, by Capt. Gascoyne, 2/7 Sherwoods. John later became Post Master at Williton and Reading Post Offices
