Arthur was born in 1899 in London. He was a regiment soldier and most probably joined the army in 1912. He served in India with the Royal Artillery, and was then transferred to France where he was wounded in the leg, shoulder and arm. He may have been in hospital in Switzerland.

He joined the fire service after the war, and retired in 1965. He enjoyed his time in India, so visited in the summer. Arthur also met his wife after the war and married in 1924/5. He lived to 93.
