Benjamin England joined the Territorial Force in 1912 when he was 17 and a half near Otley, Yorkshire. He became a joiner and met his wife when he was 18. He married her on 6 August 1914.

He decided to join the Home Service and was part of the 2/8 West Yorkshire Regiment. He went to the Western Front in January 1917 with the 62nd Division. He was involved in operations on the anchor in Northern France. He then followed up on the German retreat to the Hindenburg line around April 1917 in the Battles of Bullecourt. He was captured in the second battle on 3 May 1917 and sent to a POW camp in Germany until the end of the war. He returned home following the war and moved to Australia, where he divorced his wife and remarried. He never returned home.
