7922: The Papers of Lance Corporal John Campbell Smith

John Campbell Smith, from Rutherglen, served as a Lance Corporal with the Seaforth Highlanders. He was believed to have been conscripted early on in the conflict. He died as a result of injuries sustained at the Battle of the Somme.

His collection of objects and papers was brought in by his great niece, Lynda Smith.

Object(s)

John Campbell Smith's collection of objects and papers was brought in by his great niece, Lynda Smith. Among other medals, the collection includes his death penny. There is also a certificate signed by the Provost of Rutherglen, conveying sympathy to the family following his death. John Campbell Smith kept a diary about his time during the war, and there is also a poem written by him while in the trenches. A letter written by Smith, believed to be addressed to his siblings, has been transcribed, while one to him from his sister was sent back home after he had died. A photograph shows John Campbell Smith in uniform and smoking, while two photographs of his grave, one before the war had ended and another in more recent years are also included.
