773: Roy Harding (map)

online resource
posted on 2024-01-12, 10:52 authored by Lest We Forget Project Team

This map of the French trenches dating 1918 shows telephone centres, bridges and headquarters. It covers the area around Cambrai, very close to the Belgian border, just before the second battle here. Although the map belonged to Roy Harding, it is not clear if it was him who used the map in the war and his family do not know where it came from. It is believed that Roy Harding was a conscientious objector in the Second World War but his reasons are not known. It is possible that he could have been involved in the First World War as one of the young teenage conscripts or it could have belonged to another family member or he could have just acquired it out of interest.
