Robert Watson Ramsay was born on May 25, 1891, in Springburn, Glasgow. A coach trimmer by profession, he served during two World Wars with the Cameronians (8th Scottish Rifles).

He service during World War One took him across Europe, to Gallipoli, and to Egypt. He was wounded by a gunshot to his left shoulder in 1918.

Robert Watson Ramsay recorded his experiences of World War One with an extensive series of handwritten notes that have been passed down through the family. Selected specifically here are the official correspondence confirming his wounding in action, and a poem, Ode on Solitude by Alexander Pope, handwritten by Robert Watson Ramsay and stained with blood.
