James was born in Sparkbridge, Cumbria. He joined the police in London and was also a boxer. When the war broke out he joined the West Surrey Regiment. In 1917, he was at the Third Battle of Ypres for 13 days, before he was killed at the Battle of Kemmel Hill in April 1918. Included here is a photograph of James brought in by Elizabeth Dawson, his great-niece.
