This is my grandfather, Frederick Bertram Halliwell, who was born in 1883 at the De Grey Rooms because his father was the steward when it was used as an officer's mess for the Yorkshire Hussars. He was a chorister and the Minster. In the first world war he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery first as a Corporal, then a Sergeant. Then the RFA as 2nd Lieutenant. Unfortunately, when the cavalry was reassigned to the trenches, he was gassed which gave him very bad asthma and he died in 1931.
