Manuscript of poems in ink with corrections, signed 'S. S.'. 'The Dug-Out' was initially composed at St Venant in July 1918. Both were published in 'Picture-Show' (1919). The 'Dug-Out' was based on how Siegfried Sassoon's fellow officer 'Jowett' looked while he was asleep.
