Apologizes for having failed to write / blames the distractions of fiction / acknowledges two letters from Charlotte / describes being back in reserve following front line duty / the sound of the shells / a dog that has befriended him / a letter with photographs from their mother at Plymouth / receiving a copy of the 'Blue', the Christ's Hospital school magazine / the 'Southern Weekly' and the 'Daily Mirror' / discusses the goings-on at Christ's Hospital, some articles and the OTC / carries on the next day, describing returning to the trench mud and dugouts / the sights and sounds along the line / returning to find that his dog had been claimed by another group of soldiers / reading Mark Twain's 'Tom Sawyer' and 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' and 'Impertinent Reflections' / the experience of a shell attack / a postcard from George Rhea discussing a fellow schoolmate who had died / perservering / despondent at descriptions of an apathetic England.
