Photographs showing fortifications, sandbags and soldiers north of Ypres; the town of Ypres from the German front line; and postcards of a church at Poperinghe which Edmund Blunden notes was 'Bought 1917, when you could still see the date on the church, before the Passchendaele upheaval'; and the Brigade Headquarters at No 4 Bridge Essex Farm, near Ypres. The book was compiled by Blunden with the intention of providing complementary photographs supporting the narrative and poems of 'Undertones of War' (1928), and was inscribed 'E.B. New Year, 1935' while Blunden was living in North Oxford, a neighbour of Graham Greene.
