Manuscript in pen in Marion Scott's hand. A pencil draft of the poem exists in the notebook 64.5.7. This draft shows revisions to the final two lines. Written while Ivor Gurney was a patient at Lord Derby's War Hospital being treated for shell shock. The poem was published in 'The Spectator' on 11th January 1919. Included in 'War's Embers' (1919).
