Manuscript in pen in Marion Scott's hand. From the 'Hospital Pictures' series. A draft version exists in the black manuscript notebook 52.1. Ivor Gurney included a copy of the poem in letters of 24th November 1917 and 3rd January 1918 to Scott. The miner has been identified as Pte T Evans, discussed in a letter of 26th December 1917 to Scott. Included in 'War's Embers' (1919).
