Written while Gurney was either at Barnwood House asylum, Gloucester (September-December 1922) or Stone House, Dartford, Kent (the City of London Mental Hospital where Gurney stayed from December 1922 until his death). Manuscript drafts found in the notebook 'GA 45457' entitled 'Best Poems'. Other shorter drafts also exist in various notebooks. A version was included in the Edmund Blunden edition of Ivor Gurney's poems published in 1954 as well as the version published by Leonard Clark in 1973, as well as P.J.
