Typescript of poem with pencil alterations in an unknown hand. Prepared by Marion Scott, and possibly amongst those poems submitted to and rejected by the firm Sidgwick and Jackson in 1922. Numerous versions of the poem survive, with particular alterations to line 13 and the final three lines. An alternative version exists, beginning with the line 'The Captain addresses us...'. The version shown here was included in P.J. Kavanagh's 'Ivor Gurney: Collected Poems' (2004).
